1 June 2011 – The Australian Government has provided sponsorship towards the development of the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA’s) Green Star – Communities rating tool.
The Australian Government’s support for the Green Star – Communities project completes a long list of heavyweight endorsements for the program, which is the latest Green Star rating tool to be launched by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). Green Star – Communities now enjoys financial support from Federal, State and Local Governments, including every government land development organisation in the country. This tool complements a long list of other Green Star rating tools like Green Star – Education and Green Star – Industry, and dramatically expands the purview of the ever-growing Green Star program.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, has said that the project “will reinforce the Australian Government’s aspirations for more productive, sustainable and liveable cities.
“Green Star – Communities will support COAG’s [Council of Australian Governments] capital cities reforms in terms of addressing nationally significant issues such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, matters of national environmental significance, identifying priorities for investment and policy efforts by governments, providing an effective framework for private sector investment and innovation, and encouraging world-class urban design and architecture,” Minister Albanese says.
SCOPE OF THE TOOL
The Green Star – Communities project is set to become a national voluntary rating tool to encourage the best practice planning, design and construction of communities, precincts and places across Australia.
Chief executive of the GBCA, Romilly Madew, has described the Australian Government’s sponsorship of Green Star – Communities as “a defining moment for the future planning, design and construction of our communities and cities in Australia.
“We are very proud to be leading a project that will involve all three levels of government working collaboratively with industry to establish best practice benchmarks for planning, designing and constructing the places and spaces that make up our cities.”
