The team at Facility Management is delighted to present its latest annual Software Guide, the Australian FM industry’s longest-standing compilation of reputable software systems and services designed to meet the needs of FM professionals.
Software products and services have grown to occupy a central place in FM practice, planning and management, helping individual facility managers and their staff to receive, prioritise and complete ‘in the field’ tasks, as well as consolidating a new era of sophisticated corporate FM services dealing with massive portfolios and finely tuned auditing, processing and costing outlooks.
We’ve come a long way in a brief time, embracing the power of new software technologies to link FMs to their clients more effectively while recording increasingly rich databases of building performance measurements, service histories and schedules, and assorted predictive assessments of long-term building behaviour.
At least two trends are evident in the latest FM-related software offerings. Firstly, suppliers are providing increasingly integrated packages designed to synthesise information from highly disparate portfolios. So, we’re seeing the advent of sophisticated management tools that synchronise and collate diverse information streams into one central database, reducing the need for duplicated data entry and creating superior analytical outcomes.
Secondly, software is looking less like a ‘product’ and more like a ‘service’, as exemplified by the growing number of SaaS (software as a service) listings in this year’s Software Guide. Upfront costs to clients are declining as providers realise the appeal of monthly or annual lease-style plans, which have the added attraction of permitting regular software upgrades. These periodic upgrades are of vital importance because they keep FM clients operational without the need to continually replace old systems with new ones.
In this year’s Guide you will find a series of profiles showcasing the most progressive software solutions to procedural and analytical FM challenges.
The grid table below summarises the main functions of every profiled software system, and for your convenience we’ll be reproducing this table in all issues of ‘Facility Management’ throughout 2010. The 17 numbers (left to right) at the top of the table correspond to the numbered companies/systems far right of screen. Click on each name to read individual profiles.

For over 17 years Facility Management (FM) has been the only Australian publication dedicated exclusively to the facilities management industry.
Published bimonthly, FM is a truly independent publication. Its editorial is tailored to meet the needs of readers – not the vested interests of industry associations. As a result, FM is firmly established as the magazine of first choice for marketing products and services to the purchasing decision-makers responsible for the management of all aspects of the built environment.
Welcome to the Aug-Sep 10 issue of Facility Management, Australia’s premier independent publication servicing the information needs of facility managers and allied professionals in the property maintenance sector.
In this issue we present a detailed expose of Australia’s cabling crisis; our buildings are being choked by data and electrical cabling and major policy reforms are needed to correct entrenched problems.
And don’t miss the following important features: Retail, Storage, and Landscaping.
Retail
Commercial pressures in retail environments are always present – the facility manager must deliver eye-catching external and internal signage, hygienic washrooms, OHS-compliant access, water-saving HVAC units – and everything else that goes into making a trouble-free, joyous shopping experience!. See out special case study profiling the new Doncaster BMW complex in Bundoora, Melbourne.
Storage
Property purchase and lease costs per square metre are enough to reduce seasoned businesspeople to tears, so the facility manager who can squeeze extra functionality out of limited storage space is delivering tangible returns to his company. We look at automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), as well as the latest developments in data storage.
Landscaping
Many facility managers think of landscaping as a rectangular garden in front of a building… but a new generation of building designers and managers is embracing a far bolder definition of landscaping – one that places plant life within, above and wrapped around a building.
And much, much more!
