Darling Harbour Live – Innovation in asset management at ICC Sydney
At 250,000 square metres, ICC Sydney Convention Centre is one of Australia’s largest facilities. Spotless, its facility manager, embarked on technology integration to develop an operational system that connected the management services (operational, monitoring and maintenance), integrating myriad asset data streams with help-desk functionality. These include: asset integration – hard assets, plants, lifts and fixed furniture were integrated and connected to the operations system); asset barcoding – to provide real-time information about each asset and its condition, allowing staff to locate, track and replace assets; mobile tracking – information and data from multiple platforms are now integrated to staff’s individual mobile devices; help-desk – centralised hub for integrated platforms; and responsive energy efficiency – through a graphical interface BMS, air-conditioning and temperature can now be regulated and adjusted in specific areas as required.
Shepherd Filters – Shepherd Filters
The Harvest Cafe in Bathurst, New South Wales implemented the use of Shepherd Filters in order to save time and effort in washing frames. Owner Christopher Ringrose noted, “We love that it’s 100 percent biodegradable and such a better way of capturing grease. It only takes five minutes a week to change our filters.” Shepherd Filters are disposable kitchen grease protection filters that capture up to 98 percent of airborne grease before it enters the kitchen exhaust canopy or hood and duct. This dramatic reduction of grease entering the exhaust hood system brings immediate savings in reduced labour cost of ongoing filter washing, water and chemical costs, reduces the number of cleanings, roof damage costs, and provides energy savings from cleaner rooftop equipment. Shepherd Filters are made from Australian wool and are flame resistant, reduce fire risk, are biodegradable and renewable, and support Australian farmers.
South Melbourne Market and SUMS Group – South Melbourne Market: innovation for sustainability
South Melbourne Market’s (SMM) vision was to create a unique ‘village market’ combining sustainability, community and efficiency in operation. SMM has been in the same location since 1867, so part of the challenge was to retain the old-world charm of the facility while adapting to its changing commercial requirements. Working towards a model of community-led sustainability and inspiring and challenging suppliers, store holders, staff and customers, the FM team successfully introduced sustainability practices including: recycling, food rescue, waste management, water management and water monitoring.
