Chadstone expansion opens, featuring 3D modelled roof
Chadstone shopping centre officially opened its $660 million expansion last week.
Designed by CallisonRTKL and the Buchan Group, in partnership with Vicinity Centres and Gandel Group, the new design includes 100-plus new retailers, two dining precincts, a Hoyts digital cinema complex, the Southern Hemisphere’s first LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and a Tesla Motors dealership.
The space also features a 31-metre high, 7000-square metre, 3D modelled gridshell glass roof. A product of collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments at University of Stuttgart and University of Bath, the roof is the first of its kind on the continent. “The client didn’t want just any roof. They wanted the best roof in the world – one that could redefine the boundaries of what is possible,” says CallisonRTKL director Jorge Beroiz. “Every single panel of glass is different. Every node is different. I don’t think I’ll ever design another roof quite like this in my career.”
CallisonRTKL initially engaged with Chadstone in 1988 on the design of a 52,000-square metre addition and played an integral role in more recent stages of development and expansion, including the addition of Chadstone Place in 2008 and Chadstone West Mall in 2009. Throughout that time, CallisonRTKL and The Buchan Group have worked in partnership.
“All around the world, shopping centre owners and developers are trying to figure out how to reinvent their existing inventory,” says Beroiz. “Gandel Group has consistently kept the centre ahead of retail trends, and we knew that the design of this extension would be no exception.”
