Corporate responsibility: Vision Super releases latest report
Industry super fund Vision Super has released its latest corporate responsibility report, which outlines further reductions in the carbon intensity of its portfolio, as well as other environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures the fund put in place over the last year.
Vision Super CEO Stephen Rowe says that the company has already been recognised as a leader in the ESG field, being recognised as the fourth largest responsible investor in Australia, as well as being ranked 19th out of the world’s 500 largest investors for action on climate change in the 2017 Global Climate Index by the Asset Owners Disclosure Project.
“As a values-based fund, we believe we have a responsibility to act on members’ environmental and ethical concerns,” Rowe says. “Last year, we took further action to reduce the carbon intensity of our equities portfolios, because we believe it is vital to safeguarding our members’ retirement savings.
“Vision Super has taken an even greater shareholder activist role in the last year, and you’ll see some of the outcomes of that activism in the report. We’re holding the companies we invest members’ money in to account.
“On the operational front we’re also trying to reduce our environmental footprint – replacing our fleet with more efficient cars to reduce carbon emissions, reducing our paper use in the office and taking a close look at how we can minimise waste,” he highlights.
“We’re not just focused on the ‘E’ of ESG though. Issues like climate change cannot be separated from the rest of the ESG framework. Social issues and environmental issues are intertwined, with more equal societies making better environmental decisions. We consider issues like tax policy, wages, trade unionism, child labour – which are all part of our holistic ESG decision-making framework that informs all of our investment decisions as a values-based fund,” Rowe says.
