Elevator technology wins innovation award
KONE UltraRope elevator hoisting technology has won the Hindmarsh Award for Innovation at the 2014 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The new KONE technology outshone 11 other innovative projects. It can enable future elevator travel heights up to 1000 metres – twice as high as what has been possible with previous technology.
Traditionally, one of the main constraints on the height of a building has been determined by the effectiveness of elevators. Single elevator travel has been limited to a 500-metre maximum height because of the heavy weight and mass of steel ropes. KONE UltraRope comprises a carbon fibre core and a unique high-friction coating. It is lightweight, durable and eco-friendly.
According to director of Rider Levett Bucknall, Bob Richardson, the technology has already been used in Singapore for the iconic Marina Bay Sands, and has recently been specified for use across a number of projects in Australia and New Zealand that are under construction.
