Industry gathers for World FM Day
Tomorrow, the industry will celebrate World FM Day, an event which recognises and celebrates the work of facility management professionals. This year, the day centres on the theme, ‘empowering people for a productive world,’ and a number of events will be taking place across the country.
International Facility Management Association’s (IFMA) FM Consultants Council is presenting a series of webinar events from today until Friday July 15, including talks from industry professionals including Paul Doherty, Darlene Frantz and Mohamed El Agroudy.
Martin Leitch, FM Scope workplace management consultant, will also be presenting a talk as part of an IFMA virtual conference on Thursday, airing from Melbourne. ‘Integrating FM into design and build processes’ will draw on Leitch’s 30 years of industry experience. FM Magazine met with Leitch to discuss his career and the importance of World FM Day for the industry.
“World FM Day represents an opportunity for the profession and industry to promote the value it brings to business and the economy to all those external stakeholders,” Leitch says. “It is also important from an internal perspective to celebrate the achievements of all those who have contributed to its development during the preceding year.”
“For me, World FM Day lasts for about 32 hours, commencing with the opening session of the IFMA virtual conference on 13 July and concluding with it closing session on 14 July. In the intervening period, I am sitting in on a few of the 17 webinars and have the pleasure of presenting the penultimate session on ‘Integrating FM into design and build processes’ at 12:00 Melbourne time.”
Leitch’s presentation will examine how facility management can add value to design and construction processes, what barriers inhibit an increased FM involvement, and the changing role of technology during a building’s lifecycle.
“For me, the biggest development that will influence the FM sector in the coming years is the collaboration between RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) and IFMA. This will capitalise on the strengths of the respective organisations to result in a much stronger sector and a much better definition of the characteristics of a professional facilities manager,” Leitch says.
As part of the IFMA/RICS collaboration, they are using Periscope – Twitter’s new live-streaming video app – to engage members and the industry on World FM Day. Read more.
Along with the individual talks, IFMA will be hosting a mega virtual conference which will include discussion from 25 professionals in a 31 hours webinar event. Speakers include Val Moraes, Teena Shouse, David Reynolds, and Gay Tuttle, amongst many others. For the full line-up, click here.
Global FM will also be hosting a number of events, including talks in Sudan, Mexico, China, the UK. An IFMA FMCC live session hosted by Geoff Parnell, entitled ‘Technology – Enabler or Disabler,’ will take place in Sydney on Wednesday 13th at 10am.
