Nightingale 1 – Australia’s most sustainable building?
Nightingale 1 by Breathe Architecture is a development of 20 apartments in Brunswick, Melbourne that is among the country’s most sustainable buildings. The groundbreaking development boasts a NatHERS (Nationwide Housing Energy Rating Scheme) rating of 8.2 stars, is 100 percent fossil fuel free and utilises rainwater harvesting that is used in irrigation and common-area toilets.
The award-winning sustainable building was built using the ground-breaking sustainability principles of the Nightingale model. The apartments in Nightingale 1 have been designed with 100 percent fossil fuel-free building operations with a minimum 7.5 star NatHERS thermal rating and include features such as recycled timber, mid-steel light fittings and solar roof panels.
Iconic Australian brand Caroma is supporting this sustainable project by incorporating its latest innovation in bathroom technology into the exciting and highly-anticipated Nightingale 1. The Caroma Cleanflush toilet is an Australian first in bathroom technology and features in each of the 20 apartments in Nightingale 1.
It features a rimless toilet bowl and new flush-and-flow technology resulting in a bowl eliminating the build-up of germs and bacteria and is easier to clean compared to traditional toilets. Engineered with a more powerful and precise flush stream, the Cleanflush technology enables a superior solution in clearing the bowl.
Caroma spokesperson Semee Dickerson says at the heart of Caroma’s innovation for 75 years has been the desire to conserve and protect water. “Starting with Smartflush and moving to Dual Flush and most recently Cleanflush, it has been Australian design and ingenuity which has delivered globally relevant, best in class water-saving solutions across many products that are important parts of our daily lives,” she says.
“We are so proud to be a part of the Nightingale project where that same drive, desire and ingenuity has created homes not only without compromise, but also a model for housing that has a significant local and global impact.”
Caroma proudly aligns with the sustainability principles championed by Nightingale Housing, a not-for-profit organisation which provides the support and processes enabling architects to deliver multi-residential buildings that are financially, socially and environmentally sustainable – like Nightingale 1.
Caroma is the nation’s leading Australian supplier of bathroom and kitchen products for households and commercial premises, renowned for its modern designs and tireless dedication to conserving water through innovation and ongoing technology.
Nightingale 1 was initially conceived back in 2014 by Breathe Architecture. Breathe, who had just completed the award-winning sustainable development The Commons, wanted to build upon this prototype and create industry-wide change through demonstration projects. Nightingale 1 is the first step towards this.
Recently Nightingale Housing won the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Award. Apart from the initial Nightingale 1 development, there are currently 11 other Nightingale projects currently under development in Brunswick, Melbourne; Fairfield, Melbourne; Brunswick East, Melbourne, and Fremantle, Perth.
Nightingale 1 is located on Florence Street, Brunswick, Melbourne and was completed in December 2017.
