Sustainable relocatable shower and toilet facilities
Patrons at this year’s Splendour in the Grass event near Bryon Bay will be the first to experience a new state-of-the-art, waterless and low-odour composting toilet.
In North Byron Parklands, 258 of the composting toilets have recently been installed for the festival. Thanks to Byron Shire Council’s commitment to sustainable technologies, Parklands worked with the Australian company Quicksmart Homes, which designed and commissioned the toilets and 192 low-flow gas-fired shower stalls.
Being 100 percent re-locatable, the design allows a huge amount of flexibility in terms of providing unique camping and event layouts for events. The modules were fitted onto removable screw pile foundations.
The initiative will provide a number of key environmental benefits, including a significant reduction in waste-water truck movements and a dramatic reduction in waste being sent to the Byron Shire Council-owned sewerage treatment plant.
“While the vast majority of outdoor venues rely on transporting hundreds of port-a-loos and showers to and from site, Parklands and Quicksmart Homes have delivered an infinitely more sustainable solution that resolves many of these transport and waste disposal issues,” says Mat Morris, general manager of Parklands.
