World FM Day – The advantages and disadvantages of technology
Is technology an enabler or disabler for the facility management industry?
That was the question investigated by A&O Facility Management director Geoff Parnell on Wednesday as part of the International Facility Management Association’s (IFMA) virtual conferences for World FM Day, which took place on July 13.
According to participants in the online conference, technology is overwhelmingly an enabler of the industry.
And Parnell agrees, “As I’ve experienced, the technology that is available today allows us to carry out our role as a facility management professional in a much more effective way.”
He continues: “But it is ensuring that looking at all of the issues we have covered today, to make sure it is an enabler because if you don’t (then) manage that technology effectively then it has the ability to be a disabler, in terms of some of those key issues of managing stakeholder expectations, (in terms of) communication, (in terms of) sharing knowledge and effective decision making.”
In his presentation, Parnell outlined the advantages and disadvantages of technology from a facility management perspective.
The advantages of technology that he says can make it an enabler include:
- Easy access to information anytime, anywhere
- Encourages innovation and creativity
- Effective data management
- Improved decision-making
- Improved communication
- Improved accountability
- Efficiency and improved productivity
However, the disadvantages of technology that he says can lead to it becoming a disabler for FM include:
- Increased isolation
- Reduced social and communication skills
- Job loss
- Reduced competency
- Too much information
- Raised expectations of responsiveness.
